Zen--hey man, welcome back!

Good deal on the re-publication. You'll have to let me know how the process went with the new guys.

These are the two spreads we've been using most frequently with the Bestian Spread.

I think it comes with "practice", meaning using them all of the time. The exercise my husband gives to his neophytes is to have them meditate on each card of the tarot,s tarting with the major arcana each and then moving through the elements, each day. (Many traditions and studies suggest this). As you meditate you journal first on your own impressions, etc. Then the next day look up the meaning and reflect upon the differences (if any), similarities, and what the card truly means to you. Overall, I humbly believe that it is your relationship with the tarot rather then some set "meaning" attributed by any given author. Though, in working with Bestian I've found my own initial feelings on the cards were quite similar with what Zen already wrote. Meditation truly helps with the connection.

Take Care.

Start with the meditation on each card. It will be worth it as you just get familiar. Then you can move to using one of the spreads he has in his book or any others that seem to work with you. (Of course, I don't know how you feel about divination in general lol, so take what I say with a grain of salt).
