My pet bat.
That's a dead Red Admiral butterfly to her left to give you a size comparison. She's a tiny little thing but it looks like she's pregnant so hopefully there'll soon be mini-tiny bats everywhere. _________________

Damn. That things tiny. Hopefully it will make a bunch more and keep the bugs away. Come to think of it, do you have many bugs where your are? I think where you and I and HW live are all pretty close to the same in that regard. Except HW's in Michigan(? I think) and they have the biggest damn mosquitos I've ever seen. _________________ "Let us go and acquit ourselves like true warriors: kill everyone we can can catch and take all the valuables we can carry." - Egil |

bugs are getting to be a real pain in the arse. i had problems taking the bat's picture because there's a bumble bee nest directly under her (about 2 foot under her). I heard loads of scratching sounds and thought it was just mice but the place was teeming with them. I've counted 5 seperate wasps nests in the roof of my house - 3 different species of wasps, a hornet's nest in the dead tree in teh garden and a honey bee's nest somwhere close by but i haven't found it yet. The house is constantly buzzing with flies, particularly horseflies which are horrible bastards which bite quite painfully. Luckily they don't bite while indoors but don't ask me why. They bit the hell out of me while i was strimming grass today as they're attracted to sweaty, naked flesh. Some of teh insects we get just defy teh imagination. I can honestly say that a week doesn't go by without me encountering some fucked up species of insect that i've never seen before. Yesterday there was an immense flying black beetle - huge MoFo that was droning around teh garden. it was ridiculously large.
we occasionally get praying mantis, which i lik to keep as pets and pit them against one another or otehr species. There's one insect which is really horrible - it looks like a land crayfish and is about 5 inches long.
As for spiders, we must have about 30 different species living within the house. There are only a couple of them which give me cause for concern as they resemble ones i've encountered elsewhere which can be hazardous (one is large with a visible fur and the other has a pronounced shiny black shell with a little red mark on it).
There's only a couple of insects that i'm really concerned about - hornets, obviously (i had one hovering around my face yesterday and that's quite a scray experience as they're bloody loud, large and very aggressive so you just have to remain stock still) and woodworm. my back garden is a huge complex of antmounds which never go away (they were levelled by tractor a few months back and they've all returned). The forest ants are pretty scary buggers. I wouldn't like to get bitten by one. _________________

We definitely have our share of bugs here in Michigan. Currently, the lightning bugs are out in the early evening, which are real fun to watch and completely harmless. We have tons of spiders throughout the house pretty much year round as well. Mosquitoes can be real bad here and can carry West Nile virus. Several Michiganders die each year from it lately. We also have what they call no-seeums, because you never see them but they bite like hell. Also black flies. Horse flies are prevalent near farms, otherwise their smaller cousins the deer fly can be quite bad. If you go out on a boat in Lake Michigan you'll get these flys that look like ordinary house flies, except they are super agressive and bite hard. Lots of hornets, wasps, yellow jackets--which are usually the most agressive, bumblebees, honey bees, etc. Lots of ants, but generally not the biting kind. I got run off the road on my bicycle once when in Texas and rode right through a red ant hill. By the time I could stop and get off and start brushing them off I probably had two dozen bites. _________________ I do not hide in shadow, for I am the shadow; thus to hide, I hide within myself. |

I know how you feel about spiders but I'd recommend you kill those that are black with the red marks Zen. In Florida I used to these huge nests of Black Widow egg sacks right above my front door. They are extremely poisonous. i would think the ones you are seeing are too. My basement is packed full of spiders but I don't see many upstairs. _________________ "Let us go and acquit ourselves like true warriors: kill everyone we can can catch and take all the valuables we can carry." - Egil |

Cool pet man! Besides the bugs, is it low maintenance? _________________

Been wondering as I have not seen him on for several weeks. Also, Spesh came back after a long time off but only stuck around a few days.
Maybe we're just too boring. _________________ I do not hide in shadow, for I am the shadow; thus to hide, I hide within myself. |
